GJS today announced it has completed the first Australian install of the new Brother GTX garment printer with custom t-shirt printing business Das T-Shirt Automat. The Victorian-based business has three stores located in Melbourne and will integrate the Brother GTX garment printer into its existing workflow to increase production.
“Our philosophy has always been to deliver an exceptional-quality printed product, no matter if our customers are ordering a single shirt at one of our storefronts, or having 200 designs created,” said Ed Redman, co-founder, Das T-Shirt Automat. “By investing in the latest direct-to-garment technology, not only can we continue to deliver on this philosophy, but we can also speed up production and increase our output,” Ed added.
The GTX features Brother’s next-generation printheads that deliver incredibly fast print speeds at a constant 1200×1200 dpi whilst maintaining one-pass printing for all print sizes and the new white ink circulation system and wet capping station both help to reduce both maintenance costs and time.
Brother’s newly developed Innobella Textile Inks deliver a 30 percent wider colour gamut than the GTX’s predecessor, delivering stronger purples, blues and pinks and with the inclusion of 800mb of onboard memory that allows the operator to store up to 100 designs in the printer itself, the GTX can be operated without a PC or USB if needed.
“We have never seen such interest and appetite for a new printer than what we have seen with the GTX,” said Greg Stone, managing director, GJS. “What this demonstrates is that the Australian market is at a level of education and maturity with direct-to-garment technology where it will continue to seek out and embrace newer technology, which at the end of the day is a win for end-users and consumers,” Greg added.

Primera Technology, a manufacturer of specialty printers, has announced its new FX500e Foil Imprinting System. FX500e is Primera’s new and improved foil imprinter, adding brilliant metallic highlights to pre-printed or blank labels.
It’s a suitable accessory to Primera’s LX- and CX-Series color label printers and other laser- or inkjet-based label printers. As the imprinting process is digital, virtually any design elements can be added to the label including borders, fonts, graphics and backgrounds. Metallic foils enhance product labels because a message of luxury and elegance is conveyed that emphasizes the quality and value of each product.
Metallic foils in gold, silver, blue and red are available, as well as various spot colors and clear foil. When printed onto pre-printed labels, clear foil not only adds a professional, glossy finish but also makes labels virtually waterproof and UV resistant, allowing longer exposure to natural and artificial light sources. With the launch of the Accurio Press C6100 series, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Australia introduces two new presses for the mid to high-volume production print market. These print systems have been developed to deliver reliable efficient operation, while producing consistent image and colour quality, which is demanded by print professionals.
As a successor of the flagship bizhub PRESS C1100_C1085 series, the brand-new Accurio Press C6100 series combines the high-quality and performance of the previous models with additional capabilities, all designed to increase customer print and profitability.
Intelligent Quality Optimiser (IQ-501)
In addition to these two new models, Konica Minolta is introducing the new IQ-501, which embodies a fully-automated, closed-loop quality management system that results in superior colour consistency and accurate front-to-back registration. Expanded media and print capabilities

Long sheet capability will be available in early 2018 enabling the printing of duplex long sheet up to 762mm and simplex up to 1200mm long, ideal for producing book covers and folded collateral, creating new opportunities professional print and graphic communications providers.

Monarch Renlita was chosen to design and manufacture the final specifications for the grand entry to The District at Chatswood Interchange. The door opens completely outward measuring 4m wide by 4.5m high. The door is hydraulic powered and LED screen cladded.
To allow for the weight of the door, the architects designed it with hydraulic cylinders underneath the door which would result in support for the door from below. However, as Monarch Renlita designed the final specification, we noticed that the hydraulic cylinders could be placed above which would keep them completely out of site while still providing support for the door.
Seemingly floating above the entrance to The District, the door elegantly sits in its surrounding architecture, welcoming you into the designer food court. The door looks impressive and creates a surreal experience as you walk over the bridge and under the huge awning displaying brightly lit imagery from the LED screens.
The Monarch Renlita door that was used for The District falls under our hydraulic door range. Our hydraulic doors introduce new options for greater weight and versatility in the folding door series.
Hydraulic doors are suitable for many applications including: Shopping Centres, Bar Tops, Counter Tops, Shopfronts, Doorways, Sports Complexes, Arcades, Clubs, Gyms and Restaurants. Digital embellishment capabilities can open the door to printed electronics and custom content. Most importantly, it can help create differentiation.
With the help of digital embellishments, print is “poised for a comeback as an engine of growth,” contends Jack Noonan, marketing coordinator for MGI USA. Although digital embellishments are still a relatively new area of growth for commercial printers, there is a definite potential for new job and profit expansion.
One of the key trends in digital embellishments is the increase in research and development dedicated to printed electronics.
The most common forms of printed electronics are Remote Frequency Identification (RFID) and Near Field Communication (NFC) tags, which are commonly used in smart packaging. Noonan explains that they work as antennae for transactional encounters, data transfers or as the informational link between a printed piece and digital communications. An advantage of this technology is that it can be used on a variety of substrates, including paper, synthetics and plastics.
Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) is another form of printed electronics that, as Noonan describes, uses “organic materials that are deposited as micro or Nano particles used in a custom-designed way to light up flexible display substrates.” The technology can be used in applications to create a source of light or provide internet connectivity. For example, OLED can be used to create illuminated flexible displays or interactive labels and packaging.
Another printed electronic solution, Quantum Direct Development (QDOT), has “subatomic energy properties” making it similar to an OLED application, according to Noonan. The technology utilizes the chemical properties of intelligent ink to generate energy that is converted into light or heat.
A more advanced printed electronics application, Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) technology is ideal for the production of solar cells using printable energy circuits.
Looking at the future of the printing industry, Noonan believes that this aspect of digital embellishments will be the future of print, from a business standpoint. The technology offers new job volumes and profit opportunities.
“The application base will be growing exponentially every year that goes by because we’re heading into the Internet of Things and integrated digital connectivity,” he says. “Not only are computers, satellites and cellphones connected but, in fact, everyday objects and engineered manufactured materials can be connected. It’s going to be a very dynamic and vibrant world of three dimensionality in terms of information and communication.”
Digital embellishments play a key role in the evolving omnichannel world of print and digital communications. However, it’s crucial to utilize customer data to reap the full benefits of digital finishing technology. Noonan explains that embellishments — such as 3D digital textures, 2D spot UV and variable embossed foil — can be used to personalize direct mail, which helps to build customer relationships. For example, he says if a printer were to analyze customer data and find that a consumer prefers a specific type of product, that product could be added to a piece of direct mail and embossed to emphasize the personalization.
Noonan points specifically to variable data hologram technology as a solution for unique versioning and security measures with personalized images and text. He explains that by using MGI Meteor Unlimited Colors Press Series technology, for example, printers can create customizable holograms more cost-effectively than by traditional methods. According to Noonan, the technology is highly complementary to digital enhancement applications, and can serve as a way for commercial printers to secure more business with added value capabilities.
“The future of print is a blend of traditional ink and paper with digital connectivity because we now live in an electronic world of information,” he says.

The portfolio of materials is designed to reduce packaging falsification and tampering in the pharmaceutical sector.
The need to protect the safety of pharmaceutical products has risen in recent years, and Avery Dennison has developed a portfolio of materials designed to reduce packaging falsification and tampering in the pharmaceutical sector.
“Drug counterfeiting is a major global problem. Patient safety is compromised by product manipulation and substitution, and manufacturers can experience damage to their brand image, sales and revenue,” explains Gabriela Gregor, Avery Dennison’s project manager for pharmaceutical labeling. “Our products can change the game in protecting patient safety and safeguarding manufacturer reputation.”
One key product range in the portfolio is the Tamper-evident Seal Range, which, when combined with newly formulated adhesive S799P, makes tampering with cartons more difficult, and eases compliance with the EU Medicine Directive 2011/62/EU, which is designed to prevent “falsified medicines” from entering the legal prescription supply chain, and also applies to some over-the-counter products.

Konica Minolta has enhanced its new Industrial Printing product portfolio with the launch of the MGI JETvarnish 3D Evolution.
The JETvarnish 3D Evolution, developed and manufactured by Konica Minolta’s strategic partner MGI, is available in three sizes from B2 to B1. It delivers high volume productivity with up to 4,065 B2 size sheets per hour, offers remarkable registration and the ability to create brilliant and highly profitable 2D and 3D effects with up to 200 micron in a single pass.
It applies spot UV coating as a top layer to make prints more vivid, tactile and exclusive. The varnish adds a creative touch to a wide range of applications, including luxury packaging, book covers, business cards or greeting cards, brochures, flyers, posters, magazines, photo books, and many more. This makes the JV3D Evolution an interesting add-on product for more or less any print provider operating toner, offset or inkjet print systems.
With the JETvarnish 3D Evolution it is easy to spot coat digital and offset prints, highlight defined areas, or add tactile 3D effects – all of which create attractive print products that are more vivid and tactile. When combined with inline hot foiling module additional glamorous effects are possible.

It was founded in 1975 as a book and offset printer. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has recently released Taxation Ruling 2017/D6, setting out the ATO’s updated guidelines regarding when an employee can claim a tax deduction for their travel expenses and the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) implications of these expenses.
According to the ruling, an employee can claim a tax deduction for travel expenses incurred in earning their salary or wage, or if the expense is work-related. However, what exactly constitutes an expense “incurred in earning income”, and what is considered “work-related”?
Normally, the factors looked at when determining if a travel expense is tax deductible include:
Travel expenses that are typically tax deductible include transport, accommodation, meals and incidentals paid for by the employee during a work-related trip. Travel costs where the employee is travelling to a site or alternative workplace are also included.
Travel expenses that are typically not tax deductible include;
These principles hold true in the ATO’s current draft ruling. The draft ruling does not provide new ground for tax deductions, but rather provides better and clearer guidance in the context of the modern workplace environment.
In particular, the ruling deals with fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers, as well as addressing the more transient nature of modern workplaces, such as where an employee is required to work in two different locations (i.e. two days a week in one location and the rest of the week in a second location).
For FIFO workers, the draft ruling states that in certain circumstances fly-in and fly-out travel may be deductible, and therefore is not subject to FBT if the employee is being paid for that travel time and is under the employer’s direction and control whilst travelling. However, if the employee is not paid for that travel time, and is not subject to the employer’s direction whilst travelling, these expenses will not be tax deductible and if paid by the employer, may be subject to Fringe Benefits Tax. The ruling provides a number of examples that can assist in determining any associated travel expenses of the employee and therefore whether the trip itself would be FBT exempt for the employer.
In certain circumstances employees who are required to work in two different locations (called “co-existing work locations” in the draft ruling), may claim their travel expenses between these locations (including accommodation, meals and incidentals) as tax deductible. Consideration must still of course be given to whether there is a private and therefore non-deductible portion to these travel expenses.
The ruling introduces a term “special needs travel,” which supports the potential for travel expenses to be deductible. These workers are generally FIFO workers, but this term could also extend to others were the demands under their employment include; a requirement for them to work remotely, travel is part of their employment activity, to continuously change work locations or to work away from home.
The draft ruling provides eighteen examples of various travel expenses and working arrangements, the tax deductibility available on those expense and the associated FBT impact. Not all scenarios will be covered by these examples, however when read in context, can provide guidance for assessing one’s unique circumstances.
Importantly, the ruling is still only a draft, but we expect that many of the concepts and examples to remain in the final ruling.

HP Inc. announced a new range of durable textiles certified for HP Latex printers to produce soft signage and décor applications, combining durability and outstanding print quality with the benefits of water-based HP Latex technology.
The new textiles from selected media vendors1 expand possibilities for durable HP Latex printing for soft signage applications, including backlit and front-lit banners, block-outs, backdrops, and Point of Purchase displays, with higher durability. These textiles also enable new home décor applications, such as curtains and blinds, cushions, lampshades, and bags, on materials made from 100% cotton, cotton linen or polyester. Some of the new textiles can also achieve washability with a heating process after printing.
“We continue to expand on HP’s promise to deliver new possibilities for HP Latex printers. New textile applications for HP Latex
At SGIA in booths 1029 and 1045, HP is presenting a textile showcase and printing on HP Latex printers, including the HP Latex 3600 Printer, winner of the 2017 SGIA Product of the Year Award in the Roll-to-Roll Solvent/Latex (over 80 inch) category. The HP Latex 3600 delivers high-volume printing and high monthly duty cycles, designed for PSPs needing long-run, uninterrupted printing.
Textile printing is also supported on the HP Latex 1500 Printer, a robust, affordable printing solution, delivering fast turnarounds, HP Latex 560 and 570 Printers, designed for medium-to-large PSPs with increasing print volumes, and for smaller volumes, on the HP Latex 365 Printer.
