A new thick paperboard from Iggesund Paperboard has been certified for HP Indigo for printing high-value applications on commercial digital presses.
The 18 pt (457 microns ) Invercote Creato 380 g/m2 is double coated on both sides, offering identical print surfaces on both sides, making it especially suitable for premium packaging applications The paperboard was tested and certified for the HP Indigo 10000 series and HP Indigo 7000 series presses.
“When developing this product’s grammage and thickness, our development team wanted to ensure we meet not only the demanding requirements of conventional printing methods, but also the needs of digital printers who are looking for the thickest possible substrate that today’s digital presses can handle. This grammage is especially interesting to the US market where 18 pt is an attractive thickness for a lot of applications”, says Petra Kreij, Product Manager for Invercote at Iggesund Paperboard.
Tests were conducted at HP Indigo testing center in Singapore in multi-shot mode on an HP Indigo 7600 press and an HP Indigo 10000 press. At Iggesund, the certification process has been coordinated by Wout van Hoof, Senior Technical Manager with a special responsibility for digital printing processes.
“We are very pleased that Iggesund has certified this new thick substrate. It is one of the thickest products that has been certified for our HP Indigo presses, opening new high-value packaging opportunities for HP Indigo commercial press owners,” said Heidemarie Hinger, HP Indigo Commercial Media Manager.
Invercote Creato 380 g/m2 joins the other grammages within the portfolio of which all the lower grammages already have HP certification. All certified products and grammages are available in the HP MediaLocator, and through regular Iggesund distribution.

Esko, a global supplier of integrated hardware and software solutions for the print and packaging sectors, has unveiled its fastest single head imager, the new Optics 100v2, delivering a 25% increase in productivity for corrugated plate imagers. The speed and quality option is the latest addition to the Esko CDI range featuring unique and patented ‘single head’ split laser technology.
Exclusive to the CDI Crystal and CDI Spark platforms, the innovative Optics 100v2 features a new imaging setup that enables plate makers to obtain one 5080 (50in x 80in, or 127cm x 203cm) full sheet more per hour from their CDI and achieve a remarkable 100% increase in productivity on partial plates.
“We have developed Optics 100v2 to address the major pain points faced by the industry,” said Pascal Thomas, Director of Flexo Business at Esko. “Cost pressure is increasing across the board and a lot of skilled labor and expertise is involved in flexo plate making for corrugated print production.
“This latest innovation means that prepress operators can now work faster, producing one more plate per hour, and importantly improve the efficiency of operation by 20 per cent,” explained Pascal. “Not only that, but we all know that since plate materials can be very expensive, it is necessary to use as much of the offcut material as possible to minimise waste.
“Traditionally it has taken 15 or more minutes to image a partial plate to avoid machine imbalance, but now with Optics 100v2 it is significantly faster at less than seven minutes for a 1m2 offcut. Plate makers can reduce waste, use less energy and minimise operator input to lower costs and boost operational efficiency.”
The overall increase in productivity leads to a 20% improvement in operating efficiency, while the ability to obtain a full 5080 sheet more per hour means an additional eight 5080 sheets per typical shift.
“This is by far the fastest single head optics system on the market today,” said Pascal. “The single head system removes the problem of gluing or linking two heads together in the middle of an image, and additionally the new imaging setup enables the use of full speed on partial plates regardless of the thickness, unlike when using multiple heads. The design also reduces vibration and optimises thick plate imaging, which are the typical for the corrugated industry.
“This enables significantly faster imaging on thick partial plates and creates freedom for operators to prepare the next plate while waiting, increasing productivity and efficiency further still,” said Pascal.

Screen GP Australia has announced the global parent company’s plans to target the package printing field as a strategic business area and progressively strengthen its product line-up and solution development for this market.
Screen GP Australia Managing Director Peter Scott says: “Screen has several exciting new products coming into our portfolio of packaging print, which already includes the highly successful Truepress Jet L350UV digital label press series, with over 170 units shipped; the recently announced L350SAI higher productivity seven-colour label presses and the newly improved ‘N’ series of the PlateRite FX Flexographic digital platemakers.”
He continues: “In identifying packaging print as a major growth area of the graphic arts, Screen has conducted extensive R&D to bring sustainable, digital, variable and versatile on-demand production targeting folding cartons, corrugated and flexible packaging in addition to labels. The first new product announced is a new high-speed, water-based inkjet system specifically designed for the flexible packaging market. The PacJet FL830 is currently scheduled for release around Autumn 2021, just in time for drupa.”

While certain flexible packaging products can be produced on the 350mm web Screen L350UV digital presses, conventional flexible packaging production lines require wider-width roll materials.
Scott says: “This is not an intermediate step-up; it is a whole new approach to flexible packaging based, not only on short-run dynamics but also addressing real FMCG market demands of rapid time-to-market with high quality vibrant packaging, clean, sustainable production by-passing the platemaking stage and the ability to vary the printed content to suit variations in the product packaging such as flavours, versions and marketing needs.”
This new high-speed, water-based inkjet printing system is specially designed for flexible packaging and can handle media up to 830mm wide at speeds of up to 75 meters per minute. It is also capable of printing at a resolution of 1,200 dpi using CMYK and White water-based inks that conform to relevant food safety regulations. These features allow it to deliver both the excellent safety and rich colour expression that is essential for the food products industry.
Thanks to its outstanding quality and productivity, the PacJet FL830 is able to meet a wide variety of print needs, ranging from promotional to production applications. It also demonstrates exceptional responsiveness for small lot jobs of less than 4,000 linear meters, an area that can be problematic for conventional production. At present, the system handles both PET and OPP media, with Screen working to further expand compatibility based on industry requirements.
Corrugated and Folding Cartons using high-speed inkjet
As announced at drupa 2016, Screen has been working with German company BHS Corrugated since 2016 to develop a water-based inkjet printing solution capable of delivering high-speed throughput of 300 meters per minute at widths of up to 2.8 meters. The partners are creating the system in response to growing demand in the shelf-ready packaging and full colour corrugated board markets. The speed of 300 metres per minute is common in high-volume corrugated production and converting, so the addition of variable water-based inkjet in full colour, will open up new markets that currently depend on pre-printed liner and lamination onto corrugated.
In the folding carton segment, Screen is currently cooperating with Cambridge, UK company Inca Digital Printers - a member of its own corporate group - on the development of a single pass, water-based inkjet press. This system is being specially designed to support the transition to digital printing currently occurring in folding cartons. With Inca Digital’s existing ability to print digitally, at high speeds on large cartonboard sheets used in POS and Signage applications, this move into folding cartons is both a logical and eminently achievable advancement.

Epson will add a new microcontroller unit (MCU) to the company's S1C31W series of MCUs. The S1C31W73 has an Arm®Cortex®-M0+ processor and on-chip Flash memory. Epson plans to produce 200,000 units per month when volume production begins in July 2020.
The number of functions provided in electronic equipment has been growing in recent years, and program sizes are increasing, as the amount of information is displayed. Meanwhile, equipment manufacturers need either maintain or further shrink the size of their products, making it essential to reduce the number of parts and save board space.
To solve these problems, Epson developed the S1C31W73, a single-chip microcontroller that has 384 kB of built-in Flash memory and a liquid crystal driver that can directly drive a display of up to 2,560 dots.
By combining Epson's strong microcontroller display driver technology with the proven Arm®Cortex®-M0+ processor, Epson will help customers to increase the functionality and performance of their products while also reducing their development burden.
The S1C31W73 offer a wide range of built-in peripherals, including a USB 2.0 full-speed device controller, real-time clock (RTC), various timers, an A/D converter, and a temperature sensor. The low current consumption of this MCU-1.2 µA in RTC mode and a driving current of 150 µA/MHz-makes it ideal for extending the battery life of wearable products and for office equipment that can communicate with PCs over USB. The S1C31W73 can also be used in industrial equipment and measuring instruments because it operates at temperatures up to 105℃ (the highest operating temperature yet for an Epson MCU) and at voltages between 1.8 V and 5.5 V.

All LittleRed X-Series conveyor dryers and DTG-capable XD-Series conveyor dryers now feature an upgraded exhaust system that increases drying efficiency, reduces noise levels and improves operator safety, it was announced by Vastex president Mark Vasilantone.
“The new air mapping system is more powerful, removing fumes and moisture through an enlarged stack, preventing contamination of the shop environment,” explains Mr. Vasilantone. “The air flow also cools the skin of the heating chamber and control panel, improving operator safety and comfort.”
The upgrade is standard on LittleRed-X1, -X2 and -X3 models for curing of screen-printed plastisols, water-based inks and discharge, and on LittleRed-X1D, -X2D and -X3D models additionally capable of curing DTG-printed digital white ink.
Increasing the powered exhaust diameter by 5 cm for each model improves drying capacity by approximately 10 percent in high-moisture applications like water-based inks and DTG printing, according to Mr. Vasilantone.
Exhaust ducting now exits the dryers vertically from the top of the chamber instead of from the side, eliminating the additional width and 90-degree elbow previously required, while reducing noise significantly.
All LittleRed dryers are offered in multiple belt widths, as narrow as 46 cm for the narrowest LittleRed-X1D model, and up to 198 cm for the widest LittleRed-X3D model.
Capacities range from 90 to 1080 plastisol-printed garments/h, 45 to 555 water-based or discharge-printed garments/h, and 34 to 155 DTG garments/h printed with digital white ink or pretreated for DTG printing.
Modular heating chambers can be added and conveyor belts lengthened to double or triple conveyor belt speeds and drying capacities as needs grow.

Domino Printing Sciences is gearing up for the spring launch of the Gx-Series, a new range of thermal inkjet (TIJ) printers optimised for fast, efficient, and accurate coding, on product labels, flexible films, and cartons.
The Gx-Series is optimised for smart factory applications, providing manufacturers with a future-proof solution for evolving production processes. The printers are easy to use and to integrate into existing manufacturing procedures, with enhanced connectivity, a simple user interface and a smaller overall footprint. The domino Cloud capability provides remote monitoring, while options for EtherCAT and PLC communications allow for fast data transfer and synchronisation.
‘The Gx-Series utilises industry standards, which allows for integration into existing automation systems to provide an industry 4.0 ready coding and marking solution,’ said Alexandros Mountis, TIJ product manager at Domino. ‘The option of the EtherCAT communication allows our TIJ printers to communicate directly with programmable logic controllers to provide greater control of manufacturing processes, translating into increased productivity, and reduced coding errors.

Advanced track and trace and item-level serialisation are available via Dynamark protocol, with coding in compliance with pharmaceutical regulations, including EU FMD and US DQSA, according to GS1 standards.
Gx-Series are controlled by an intuitive user interface and touch screen or remotely via web browser. Customers can select from one to four print heads, which can be stitched together to allow for print heights of up to 50.8mm (2in), or used separately to print on multiple lines at speeds of up to 300m/min (984ft/m). Epson has announced that it will apply and use its patented Dry Fibre technology, the same technology it uses within its unique PaperLab A-8000 system, to now start producing face masks for its employees.
The masks that Epson will now manufacture respond to growing demand for face masks for protection against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Epson’s PaperLab A-8000 in-office dry paper making system, is a dry-process* technology that enables the processing and creation of paper on-site, in the amount you need and when you need it. In the case of the new masks, they will be made not from used paper but from functional fibres and will be manufactured at two of Epson’s production plants. This in turn will eliminate the need for Epson to outsource purchasing masks for its employees.
As well as manufacturing the masks in-house for its employees, Epson will also donate 100,000 masks to local authorities and medical institutions where needs for personal protective equipment (PPE) have been expanding. The company will also donate 5,600 face shields to the same organisations.
Epson does not plan to sell the masks it manufactures commercially.
Epson often makes significant and regular contributions to realising a sustainable society and has made a commitment to ongoing efforts that realise the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

They say ‘the future is digital’. And GMG Color, agree. Instead of traditional ink drawdowns, digitally-produced colour cards will soon be the proofs of choice for the approval process of packaging projects. Only with physical colour cards can all stakeholders visualise with certainty what the final printed result will look like. GMG Color, the industry leaders in the development of colour management solutions, have developed a new ColorCard tool for producing ink drawdowns. The new solution offers numerous advantages, above all: it’s digital.
An ink drawdown is traditionally a test print made with the final ink mix that gives a client an idea of the colour. Once the ink has been mixed, it’s printed out, usually on a small flatbed printer, or even just rolled onto the production paper with a small hand-roller so that it can be measured and validated. From here it would then have to be printed on a production press, and a square patch would then be cut out and stuck to a chart so that everyone involved could see exactly the colour that was going to be used. It’s fairly common to take multiple versions so that a client can judge how using different ink densities affect the colour. It’s also necessary to create copies for each person, including the client and the press operators, and might have to be repeated for different substrates. As a manual process, this equates to the high cost for the production of these colour cards.
The idea behind the ColorCard is to take out a lot of the manual repetition. It’s still necessary to mix the ink and to roll it out onto the production paper but at this point it’s measured with a spectrophotometer and the spectral data fed into the ColorCard software. From here it can then be printed out on an inkjet proofer with the appropriate proofing media and profiles to create a digitally printed ink reference that can be customised with density tolerances, customer logos and so on.
It uses standard CxF data and different proofing media can be used to simulate the effects on different substrates, including corrugated and folding cartons. It’s a simple matter to print as many copies as needed and the files can be sent electronically and printed through a remote proofing set up if necessary. And of course, the files can also be saved in the cloud for future reference.
It should be possible to produce a ColorCard in under three minutes, and GMG claims that this can save up to 90 percent of the time needed to manually produce an ink drawdown. It should allow printers to produce their own colour cards rather than paying an ink manufacturer to do it.

The first Virtual EskoWorld has been a huge success, with more than 3,500 delegates from across the print and packaging industry and all around the world taking part in a program of webinars and discussion sessions held by the global supplier of integrated hardware and software solutions.
EW Logo 2020For the two weeks from 27 April, Esko delivered its annual premier technology focused EskoWorld event through a total of 20 dedicated online sessions for brands and their packaging supply chain partners. Either through attending ‘live’ or downloading sessions, delegates discovered the latest innovations in packaging and label artwork management, prepress workflow automation and digitisation. Brand owners were able to network at live drop-in sessions throughout half-day online conferences, where they heard stories from brands who use Esko products in addition to training and product insights from the Esko team.
“This is the first time we have taken EskoWorld online and we are absolutely thrilled with the results,” said Melissa Plemen, Esko Sr. Director of Inside Sales and Marketing. “Across the ten days, we delivered a version of the same content we had planned for our eagerly anticipated live event, with experts hosting a range of exciting educational workshops and interactive learning opportunities.”

Vastex International has introduced a new Face Mask Pallet with a Quick-Stretch design for rapid screen printing on a wide variety of face mask types and styles, announced Mark Vasilantone, president.
The pallet can be secured with two lock knobs to any Vastex press, or other presses having compatible rotor arms.
“The need and use of face masks is universal and, in many cases mandatory, enabling screen printers to replace or exceed imprinted garment jobs lost due to lock-downs on concerts, sports, schools and other group events,” says Mr. Vasilantone, adding, “Since they are disposable and purchased daily in the millions, masks hold enormous volume potential for printers, not only as custom jobs but as highly creative stock designs that can be sold online for political, athletic, comical or other applications.”
Rubber strips of the Quick-Stretch frame stretch single- or multi-layer mask material over the diamond shaped, rubber covered pallets, flattening pleats and contours in the imprint area with no shifting or need for pallet adhesive.

Arrow Systems has launched ArrowJet Aqua 330R, a high-speed, aqueous pigment roll-to-roll press built with new ChromaPlex LT inkjet print engine by Colordyne for enhanced print quality and greater production flexibility.
The new press is powered by Memjet’s DuraFlex printhead technology, providing the benefits of digital printing as well as enhanced durability and fast speeds by using aqueous pigment inkjet technology. The digital workflow adds the flexibility to change designs on the fly, print on demand, implement variable data and make colour alterations without changing inks, plates, or tooling. Plus, using an aqueous pigment-based inkjet ink provides greater substrate compatibility than previous aqueous inkjet technologies.
‘The ArrowJet Aqua 330R is the first USA manufactured roll-to-roll press with an integrated ChromaPlex LT inkjet print engine from Colordyne,’ said Shaan Patel, business development manager of Arrow Systems. ‘The impressive speeds and capabilities of the system offer several benefits including improving production efficiency, reducing running costs and providing exceptional resolution. INX International Ink, with Sakata INX, have released Genesis GS washable label inks. In March, the ink was recognised by the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) for meeting or exceeding the group’s strict testing protocol for washable and recyclable PET shrink sleeve applications.
Genesis GS meets the PET-CG-02 Critical Guidance Protocol established by APR. It maintains properties in accordance with APR guidelines required for shrink sleeve applications and exhibits bleed resistance in caustic bath solutions. Since the ink is separated from the substrate and removed from the label material during the bath, a complete recyclable package is a viable option.
Genesis GS can also be used for floatable roll-fed OPP labels so a customer can print multiple label types with one ink system. Floatable applications require the ink to remain on the substrate after exposure to the caustic bath solution. The ink is capable of printing at high press speeds, displays fast drying capabilities at low temperatures and adheres well to several grades of flexible films.
‘We are very pleased with the development of Genesis GS and making it a must-have solution for label providers,’ said Mark Hill, senior vice president R&D for INX. ‘The environmental benefits are superb. With the ink cleanly removed from the PET label or floatable with OPP labels, it allows clear bottles to be made through the circular reuse of recovered materials.’
Hill said that INX’s R&D staff was able to troubleshoot a PET concern that arose during the testing process.
‘Most shrink sleeve bottles are made of PETG resin, which has a lower melting point than PET bottle flake,’ he explained. ‘Given that, the film can turn into what is essentially a glue, clumping the PET bottle flakes and making the PET harder to utilise. Additionally, inks from PETG shrink sleeves can discolour the clear bottle flakes. Our new innovations address that issue.’
APR on March 19 informed INX that all colours with and without white backing, and with inside overprint varnish on Bonpet BR1 crystalisable film, met or exceeded APR’s PET-CG-02 Critical Guidance Protocol for Clear PET Articles with Labels and Closures. The recognition was based on the technical recyclability of the decorated label innovation with PET bottles and applies only to the decorated sleeve labels.
The critical guidance protocol is a multi-industry consensus of key issues related to the recycling of post-consumer PET bottles. It directs innovators to conduct specific testing per established procedures, and the recognition is based on the innovation either meeting or exceeding the most challenging and strictest guidance criteria.
